Mayor Amicone Announces 5K Run/Walk for Kids, Police & Community
Join in the Free community event on Saturday, October 20th and help foster a better relationship between kids & police
Yonkers, NY (October 9, 2007)- Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone is pleased to announce the City of Yonkers first ever Community 5K Run/Walk, a collaborative effort intended to foster a more positive relationship between our children and the Yonkers Police Department. Mayor Amicone today joined with Perstine Wesley, of Wesley and Friends, at his well- know Yonkers store, Harry's Shoe Repair, located at 11 North Broadway, to announce the details of the joint effort and to encourage kids and their families to sign up for the upcoming run.
The 5K Community Run/Walk is being coordinated by the City of Yonkers' Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Police Department, Public Schools and the Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District in collaboration with Perstine Wesley of Wesley and Friends as well as merchants from the Getty Square area. The fun run is set for Saturday, October 20 and will start at 9:00 a.m. in Larkin Plaza and end at the PAL on North Broadway where free refreshments will be served.
"I would first like to thank Mr. Wesley for reaching out to us with this great idea," said Amicone. "I would also like to thank the various City departments and organizations that have taken an active role in coordinating this event. This is a small way we can work together to build a stronger community and a better City for everyone to live."
Harry's Shoe repair has been a well-known fixture in the City of Yonkers for many years. The owner, Mr. Perstine Wesley, initiated the community outreach group called Wesley and Friends and created the motto "If I can Help Someone" in an effort to reach out to others in and around his neighborhood. Wesley looks forward to the October 20th event as being the first of many positive community events in Yonkers he will work on.
There was excitement outside of Harry's Shoe Repair today as the announcement was made and those passing by stopped to see what was going on. Greg Butler, who is one of the "friends" of the Wesley and Friends group, thinks this could be the start of an annual event for the City of Yonkers, creating an opportunity to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and our children. He encourages everyone to participate in the family-oriented and fun activity.
To register for the race, fill out a Registration Form and bring it to the registration table in the Larkin Plaza parking lot between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on the day of the race. Thanks to local sponsors, the first 500 kids to register will receive a FREE T- Shirt.
